The Start of the Great Pueblo Revolt 1680

On August 10, 1680, the Native Americans launched the Great Pueblo Revolt against the Spanish colonists.  Missions were destroyed, 21 Franciscans were killed, and 2,000 Spanish colonists were driven out of New Mexico. The Spanish did not return until 1692. The revolt was in response the Spanish Governor’s arrest of 47 Pueblo medical doctors, who were accused of practicing sorcery. Three of the doctors were hanged, and the fourth committed suicide in prison.
